School ends in November, usually before Rainy season starts. This year Rainy season got an earlier start than normal and some kids had trouble getting to school the last two weeks or so.
In the last week, I have had two graduations. One for Sara, my employee Irina's oldest daughter. She was graduating from Kindergarten, which is a big deal here. It was fun to get to spend time with Irina's family, something I hadn't done in quite a long time since she lives kind of far away.
Yesterday I went to a 9th grade graduation for Joni, a teenage youth from the church. I have been in charge of his scholarship at a local bilingual school for the last 2 years. I help him with any school needs he has, as well as sometimes his English school work, or whatever he needs. His graduation was a very formal graduation with appetizers and a full meal and dessert. The decorations were exceptional.

The power was out last night, so I had left more windows open than usual, so I thought about what could be happening...maybe someone stealing stuff through the window, maybe a gecko or cockroach stuck in something. I didn't leave anything of value by the windows, but got up with my flashlight to check and see what it might be.
Then, I see it...the noise...it's a chunky brown mouse in my kitchen. He was perched up on my red spatula, just staring right back at me with his beady little eyes. We had a stare down for a minute. Man he was a loud mouse...moving all kinds of things around in the kitchen...enough to wake me up. So I turn on the light...and that kind of startles him. Then go to get the machete...because that's what all the Hondurans do...so I decided that was what I was going to do too.
So I get back and he finally crawls down off of my red spatula and is by the soap and...WHACK!!! with the machete. WHACK!!! again by the kitchen utensils. WHACK!!! again by the drain board. WHACK!!! again on the stove. WHACK!!! again behind the stove. Then, he's gone into the stove.
I then tried to go back to sleep...yeah right after just trying to kill a mouse. I thought I should have trapped him, not tried to kill him. It's pretty obvious that I don't have any kind of accuracy!
So, then I got this ingenious idea to get back up out of bed and turn on the stove to see if I could force him out with the heat...well he never came out. So, maybe I cooked him and will have dead mouse smell in my house until I can find someone to take apart my stove and get him out. Or maybe he is not dead and just withstood the heat and will need traps to catch him. Only time will tell, but I will ask someone for mouse traps today!
Sorry...didn't get any pictures of the fat little brown mouse...just my missed machete markings.

Christine Bellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01942613602892510350noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7957060470300876064.post-88816976102896638852014-09-12T07:49:00.000-04:002014-09-12T07:49:03.986-04:00Hospital CurtainsAfter a couple in my church donated some patient divider curtains to the hospital, we had to figure out how to get them down to Honduras. They are nice curtains, just very heavy. So, several people who have Delta flight privileges offered to fly down for the day (literally 24 hours in Honduras) in order to bring the curtains down. It was a great idea. And after my flight was delayed so much I would miss my connection, I took the refund they offered me and went with them on the Delta flight the next day. (Oh and by the way, we got to fly first class...lovely)
They arrived in Honduras to the hotel to pick us up, then sorting of the curtains, and packing them into garbage bags for transport back to the hospital. We loaded them in the trailer, then were free the rest of the day. We took naps, then went to dinner and the pool. Then sleep, and a nice big hotel breakfast in the morning before they headed to the airport once again for their flight. I stayed waiting for another missionary to pick me up and take me and all the curtains back home.
Thank you to the couple who donated the curtains. Thank you to those who brought the curtains down. Here are a few pictures of the first curtains hung.
Since then, so much has happened and I have shed lots of tears with many dear people. Last Sunday, the 29th, the Navy did a dive into the boat and was able to recover 3 bodies. Two were from our community of Lucinda and the other one was from Rio Coco (the community at the end of the road about 25 mins past the hospital). They were brought by road from the nearest port directly to the cemetery, arriving about 10:20pm. After much grieving for about an hour, they were laid in their above ground graves and topped with cement. All ended about 1:30am. It was a very sad, very exhausting couple of days as we waited with the families for any news of life or death. Many people didn't sleep from Wednesday until Monday of the next week. Many people stopped eating. Many didn't want to do anything.
Yesterday they did one final dive to see if they could recover any more bodies to give these families closure. They were able to recover 3 more bodies and found 2 more that they were not able to bring up for a total of 5 found yesterday. So, all the 8 people that were missing have all been found. One of them was also one of the 5 missing from Lucinda. He was brought right to the cemetery and buried about 12 midnight last night.
The hope of the families has been crushed. Many hoped that their loved one had escaped alive. Many hear the horror stories from the survivors of how their loved ones seemed to be screaming for help in their last minutes of life. But, despite all the tragedy, despair, and hopelessness, they are seeing hope. They are seeing love. They are living one day at a time.
I don't think that it's coincidence that just about a month before they left and died, that we had started having church services at our friend Elias' house. He had welcomed us with open arms and was so excited to host us in his house. He was excited to use his house to glorify God and to have opportunities to invite his family and His wife's family to join. This is a community where there is no current church, so we have been able to come in in the midst of this tragedy after already having been established for a couple of weeks and meet people in their despair.
The hospital has started a Fisherman Family fund to help the families of those who lost their loved ones in this tragic accident. Any funds donated will go directly to the families for food and building projects to make the homes they live in safe. (Most of these young men were sole providers for their families, so with them gone, it is going to be really hard financially) Many of them went to sea to make money for a specific project...providing for schooling for their child, finishing their house, buying property to start building a home, etc.
My heart is heavy with all the heartache around me. Where do I begin?

The week before last, I was notified that one of the little boys (Julio) who was sent for cancer treatment passed away. He wasn't responding well to the treatment, and had a stroke that he never woke up from. I can only imagine the grief of his mother and his family. It breaks my heart.

That same day, I found out that Yajaira, Calix's little cousin who I took to San Pedro for the cancer foundation, is stage 4. The Wilms tumor that she has that is typically very easy to treat, has spread to other parts of her body. She may be inoperable. One of our doctors here recently (a couple of days ago) told me they should just take her home to die. (What do you do when someone tells you this in the cafeteria and you can't break out in tears)

For a week and a half, we were taking care of a patient and her 4 kids. Her family went to our church. 2 of the kids were at the children's center (we brought them there to help the family out) and 2 with her in the hospital. The 12 year old was watching her mom and helping her with whatever she needed and watching the 2 year old baby who was still breastfeeding at the time. I went in with another missionary last Tuesday to do a CT scan bc the pain she was having in her head wasn't getting better and was not calmed by any medications. The CT scan showed swelling in the brain. That day was really hard and we started to see her decline that day. Her body became limp and she had slurred speech and we had trouble getting her back in the car. She digressed from that day until she passed away on Saturday night. Sunday we had the funeral at the church and buried her that evening. It was a very sad day, but grateful to the Lord that she had professed faith in Jesus Christ.

On Tuesday, I had run up to the hospital on my day off to see if I could see our little cancer patient, Osiris who was supposed to come in for a Chemo injection. When looking for her, a bus pulled up to the front of the hospital with a guy who looked like he had fallen off the bus. There was blood everywhere. They quickly brought a gurney and rolled him to the ER. The question to the driver was...did you run over him? He was in such shock...he couldn't really answer. He said I don't know...I think maybe. He had in fact been run over and had a crushed pelvis and some crushed organs that caused lots of internal bleeding. We did lots of X-rays and blood work that day and ended up giving him 6 units of blood. We pretty much completely replaced his blood volume. I had to call in all of my lab staff to help because there was so much work with this one patient. He went to surgery about 5 hours after arriving to stop the bleeding. He is doing well, thus far. Please continue to pray for him. He has a very long road to recovery. He is from the same community as the following story.

Wednesday, just seemed like a normal day...until we got a call that a fishing boat had sank and many from our local community were on it. There were 6 young men that went out on that boat, they left Saturday and planned to be back in 6 months with some money to provide for their families. Work is very scarce here. There are very few jobs. Many live off the land. Many leave to find work in other places. Many go out to sea to fish. Why? Because there aren't many other options. Many tried to convince them not to go. Many were young and it was their first trip out to sea. It was a hard decision they made to go. They agonized over making the decision, and then after they had made it.

When the call came on Wednesday, there were several rumors saying all were ok, then one that said only 7 had made it to the islands that we can see across the ocean call the Cayos Cochinos. The second of the 2 turned out to be the truth. The 7 were soon brought to the mainland and questioned by the Navy and coast guard who were out looking for other survivors at this point. Only one of the 7 was one of the 6 that left from our community. That left 5 young men still missing from our community and 4 from other surrounding communities. According to the testimony of the survivors, the boat went down so fast, that those who were down below sleeping (the 9), would not have had time to get out. However, they are still declared missing, not anything further as of yet.

We had a prayer service led by the local pastors last night in Lucinda. It was a very emotional time, but very good for us to rally together as a community to give hugs, show love, and pray for one another. Sometimes all you can do is hold someone and let them cry when there is so much sadness. You try to encourage them that God is good and He knows best and that His will is perfect. However, in such circumstances, the way seems so narrow, and the tunnel seems so small that the light will never appear. Several families are suffering double loss, because the community is so small. Some have lost brothers and also sons. Some have lost nephews and also brothers in law. 5 men from one community involves just about every family in the community in one form or another.

The navy has supposedly found the ship and they were supposed to be trying to dive it last night. We will probably find out today or tomorrow for sure how many people were still on board. Many of the loved ones still have so much hope that some of them escaped from the bunks down below...and so we hope with them until we have reason not to.

I knew 3 of the 5 young men who are among the missing from the local community. So, while we are sad for their disappearance and probable death, we cling to the Lord as our strength and our fortress.

My soul, wait in silence for God only,

For my hope is from Him.

He only is my rock and my salvation,

My stronghold; I shall not be shaken.

On God my salvation and my glory rest;

The rock of my strength, my refuge is in God.

Trust in Him at all times, O people;

Pour out your heart before Him;

God is a refuge for us.

It only took one week to build it, but not without lots of help. This is the class for our preschoolers and kindergartners. They got to enjoy their new classroom today without the teachers having to worry about if the roof was going to fall on top of them.
When we arrived at the Pediatric emergency room, it was just a small waiting room with several desks for doctors to see patients. The line was on a bench and that was how you were seen. If you arrive around lunch time, forget being seen for at least 2 hours. If it's a true emergency, you will probably die before anyone gets around to seeing you. They have many medical students all over the hospital to help, but they all have to be supervised in what they do, even-though they are a huge help since there is such a lack of personnel. They lack so much staffing for as many patients as they see. If you don't know how the system works, you can be yelled at easily by the secretary, and even called a liar.
When they brought us to see the oncologist, the medical student took us through the actual pediatric ER where all the patients were. Yajaira started crying hysterically as I wanted to as well. There were so many kids on ventilators, someone breathing for them, tubes going everywhere and screaming constantly. They only accept 3 children in the pediatric ICU, so the rest are admitted to the emergency room, where they have way less than ICU type care. Also, the pediatric unit upstairs was full as well as the cancer ward. So many sick kids that sometimes they are 3 to a bed. 3 sick kids in one bed!!! Horrible! The doctors start the IVs, draw blood for labs, etc. They have like 2 nurses for about 30 inpatient kids in the ER. This is where they wanted to admit Yajaira to keep her overnight. I am so glad we got to take her home. I think just the stress of being there would have made her even more sick.
The general ER overflow is in the hallway that goes to the lab and X-ray area. If you have a bed, it surely doesn't have sheets or a pillow. If you don't want to sleep on a plastic bed mat, you have to bring your own sheet. There are many sick patients and just not enough staff or space to attend to them.
So, my perception of the public hospitals was that the healthcare was free. This is not the case. If you are poor, this is where you go, but it is not free. Many things that the doctors order require money, and sometimes lots. Any hardware for orthopedic surgeries, you could pay up to $1000 for. An x-ray we had done cost like $2.50. The CT scan they ordered costs about $70. They had one done in La Ceiba at a private hospital and it was like $225, so it's significantly cheaper, but not free. Medications that the hospital doesn't have, you have to purchase. Honduras doesn't have many medications right now, including no medication in the entire country to treat Tuberculosis, so patients are having to buy more than usual.
So, many people bring their family members from far away (3-4 hours) to the hospital and they admit them. Only one person can stay with the family member on the ward, so everyone else lives outside sleeping on cardboard boxes or straw mats under the trees until their loved one is release from the hospital and they can take them home. Many of the bathroom stalls have no doors, and sometimes the shower stalls also. You can't find toilet paper or soap anywhere, so if you have to go to the bathroom, you better bring your own.
If there is a woman in labor, only she can go into the hospital, mothers, and husbands, etc have to wait outside to see the list of deliveries to see when their wife delivered and their child was born.
There are guards at every entrance and they only let people in if you have a specific reason to be there. I didn't have any problems with the guards thankfully and they let me in usually whenever I asked.
With Yajaira being associated now with the Children's cancer foundation, her Chemo drugs will be free and they will also help her with bus fares, and testing. It's a wonderful program that I am so happy to see that it exists. This is truly a wonderful gift to the children of Honduras.
This is just a small glimpse of what I saw that past week. I am sure it doesn't even begin to touch the reality of what is.Christine Bellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01942613602892510350noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7957060470300876064.post-90763026985752497572014-05-31T10:58:00.003-04:002014-05-31T10:58:46.027-04:00Please pray for YajairaPlease pray for Yajaira, Calix's little 3 year old cousin. When mom and dad were here in April, Yajaira was just a normal little girl who played with her brothers and sisters. Shortly thereafter, her family started to notice that her stomach started growing. They took her to the Centro de Salud (public health clinic), and she was treated for parasites. When that didn't work, and she kept getting bigger, they took her to the hospital. She looks like a little malnourished kid with skinny legs and arms and a very distended, hard belly. So after an abdominal ultrasound and an abdominal CT scan she was found to have a renal tumor, called a Wilms Tumor which is taking up about half of her abdomen.
Our Pediatrician made some phone calls and found a pediatric surgeon willing to do the surgery and the oncologist willing to treat her. (Thankful to have made these contacts with Dr. Judy about 2 months ago on a trip to explore options for our pediatric patients.) The family was sent one week later to San Pedro Sula to admit her to the cancer ward of the public hospital. I went with them to accompany them and help them get the care they needed.
Wednesday morning around 11:30, after a 6 hour bus trip, we arrived at the Pediatric emergency room of the public hospital in San Pedro Sula. The medical student that was attending patients, took us to see the doctor and they said there was no space, so she would have to be admitted to the emergency room. After waiting 4 hours to be admitted and nothing happening, we finally got her seen by a pediatrician (bc I went looking for help), who talked to the Oncologist and she was able to go home for the night. (So thankful they have family in San Pedro Sula) So the next morning we had to be at the Honduran children's cancer clinic at 7am. After review by the doctor, she was considered critical, because the tumor had started causing heart problems...tachycardia and a heart murmur. She was started on Chemotherapy that day (Thursday). They have to shrink the tumor with Chemo before they can take it out, because right now it is dangerously big to operate on.
Friday (yesterday), we had to go back to get a treatment plan. She will have 24 weeks of treatment. 10 weeks of Chemo therapy, with the surgery for the tumor around week 6 (if it has shrunk enough). Then every 3 weeks after that, she will need radiation therapy for the next 14 weeks.
So, please pray for the treatment to work, the tumor to shrink and for them to be able to easily take out the tumor. That Yajaira would resist the strong Chemo drugs she is being given and would have enough strength for the surgery in 6 weeks. Pray that the murmur they heard is just caused from the tumor, and she doesn't have heart problems as well that would require surgery or postpone the surgery for the tumor. Thankful I was able to go with them to help them get into the Honduran foundation for children with cancer and that this foundation exists and that they have wonderful doctors and nurses. God is so good and so faithful!
This year, we didn't have as much stuff, but we did another yard sale. We made about $275 and added it to the money from other activities and had enough to build our 3rd classroom.
I love bananas, but even more ones that I planted and have taken care of for the last year. I now get to enjoy the fruit of my labor. I have the small bananas right now that are ripening each day. They are hanging on my porch.

The Bible talks so much about sowing and reaping, that it is so neat to see this come to fruition. I have sowed banana plants, and now have reaped the fruits of my labor and have fresh bananas everyday for a couple of days.

I got up at 3:50am to start making preparations for our sunrise service at church. We started the service about 5:40am with prayer and praise. It was a cloudy day, so sadly we didn't get to see the sun rise. We finished up about 6:30 and a nice breakfast together as a congregation. We ate breakfast casserole, beans, fruit, juice and coffee. It was so much food that I couldn't eat it all. Then we had our regular service and finished up about 9:30am.
I had lunch with several of the single ladies who are here right now, some short term and some long term, and 2 of the Honduran girls from the girls home. It was a delightful lunch filled with good food and good fellowship. (sorry, forgot my camera, no pictures)

Then came back and watched the little ones from the children's center do an Easter egg hunt. They would find an egg and stop and eat the candy. They didn't get the concept that you are supposed to look for all you can find and then sit down and eat the candy. It was fun to watch.

They worked on fixing up the casitas (sanctuary housing) here at Hospital Loma de Luz. I live in one of the 6 casitas and so, they got to work in my house too. We also had lunch at my house two days on my porch. I got to work with them on Friday, which was a lot of fun. :)
They came to the hospital first, then we took them down to the children's center.

Osiris was so thrilled to show us how famous she is. She is the new model for the Honduran children's cancer foundation. You can see her at www.salvamivida.org She is also going to be in a commercial for the cancer foundation too. Her treatment is coming along well and the doctors say she is responding well. I asked her mom, Erlinda, how many units of blood and platelets she has received. She has gotten 14 units of blood and 16 units of platelets. She is starting to grow again and actually looks stronger and healthier.

I have had to go in late at night several times in the last couple of weeks, which make for tired days. We have had 3 patients pass away in the hospital in the last month and a half. One of them was an employee's 7 month old son. All 3 have been difficult for their different reasons...young being one.
I have gotten to teach some at church lately. I preached on 1 Peter 1:1-9. What a joyous passage of scripture that speaks about how we are chosen, have an imperishable inheritance stored up in heaven for us, that we have a living hope and joy in salvation. I also got to teach for father's day, which was March 19th. They celebrate Father's day in March because of the history of Catholicism, they celebrate on the day of San Jose, Jesus' father. We had a very nice sit down dinner with a program for our fathers in the church.
He was born January 17th at 6:16am weighing 6lbs 11oz. I'm officially an AUNT. (I already had several prosthetic nieces and nephews) It was a joy to be there for his entrance into the world. He is growing so fast now and gaining weight and doing well. He just turned a month old and my sister just went back to work.
This past weekend we had the directors from Christians in Action Latin America here from Guatemala for a visit at the church. We had a very busy weekend with a couples teaching on Valentine's day, a church leaders meeting on Saturday and a celebration church service with several other churches we had invited, then a business meeting on Sunday afternoon after church. All great things, but not always the most fun. I have been elected the superintendent of Sunday School and will have more responsibility now with Sunday school. I love the kids at the church and am honored to have this responsibility of their learning.

We are starting to do more fundraisers at the church to raise money for several projects, including the water project (dug well with pump to a water tank, then into the church), a shed for storing supplies, and another Sunday School classroom. There are other things we would also like to do, but these are top priority right now.

Well, after rain all night, there were no buses passing, not many cars either. But, the Pirkles decided we were still going to try to go to town. I was thrilled because eventhough there was lots of rain, I really needed to submit my paperwork. We stopped about halfway to the paved road where there usually is no water...and this is what we came to.
We were not brave enough to try it until 2 other cars passed through. We waited at least half an hour.

Yeah! Once past this and another about a mile up, we were off!

So, got to town and got my paperwork submitted for residency. So, it's official. I am a Honduran Resident. Now just waiting on the card...which could take months with the new change in government this month.

After hearing that another missionary turned around not being able to cross a river, we didn't think we were going to be able to get home either. Much to our delight, the river had gone down and was passable when we arrived. Home safe and sound and ready for the states next week with Residency paperwork in hand. God is so good!
I taught her how to make cake and she taught me how to use an oven made of mud with wood as the heat. The mud wood stoves are more common than a gas stove here, especially where we are in the campo (fields-middle of nowhere) and in the mountains. We got her oven fixed with a little door a couple of weeks ago, so today after about a month and a half of talking about making cake, we finally did.
Please pray for Veronica this month. This time last year her husband was murdered in San Pedro Sula and we all walked through that tragedy with her. She has done so well this year and really beaten many odds. At first she was so depressed, she wanted to die so she could be with him. Then she finally realized this is not what her husband would want or what the Lord would want. She fixed her house back up, and moved back in without her husband. She has put a new thatched roof on her mud hut, put in a cement floor, and payed her two kids way through school last year.

Now she is ready to start making cakes for her kids birthdays, etc. She was thrilled to learn how easy it was. It was a joy to spend a Sunday afternoon with her.

It was the day after Christmas and I wanted to bring them their little Christmas presents and see them one more time before they headed back to the capital of Tegucigalpa. I went with my friend Deyni, a medical student, who is studying in Tegucigalpa and met them there. We played, chatted, and prayed with the family.
It's amazing to see how this family has grown. There is so much joy. There are lots of toys. There is lots of love. As a family of 7 (one not pictured), with only the father working when he finds work, this father has struggled to provide for his family. Deyni said to me when we left their house, "What if God just wanted to use this experience to bless them? They are stronger, they are more loving, and closer to the Lord. The kids also have more toys now then they have ever had in their entire lives. There was a sack full of toys and stuffed animals. Even the kids know they have been blessed this year.

Christine Bellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01942613602892510350noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7957060470300876064.post-24323041488347409772013-12-24T10:44:00.001-05:002013-12-24T10:44:03.329-05:00Merry ChristmasI hope everyone is ready, or almost ready for Christmas tomorrow.
On Saturday, I was able to attend the wedding celebration of one of my best friends here in Honduras. Diana, my Spanish tutor, who taught me Spanish for my first 6 months here, got married on the 10 and celebrated with friends and family on the 21st. We gave him a blood transfusion on Friday, then they had the weekend to pack and get ready to leave for the capital. He arrived last Tuesday to the hospital in Teguc and received the diagnosis this week after about a week of testing. His blood was sent to Guatemala for specification of the type of Leukemia he had. He has probably from what I can tell AML, Acute Myeloid Leukemia. The most hope for these kids is a bone marrow transplant which they don't do here in Honduras. His mom, Sandra, is with him and is very concerned. She is very anxious and concerned for her son. She left 3 kids behind to bring him to Teguc. She is already ready to leave and desperate to leave. They have told her that he will need to be inpatient for 10 months before they are able to leave.
Erlinda, Osiris' mom, has been taking her everywhere and teaching her the ropes of having a child in the hospital with Leukemia. She says that children with the type of leukemia that Julio has almost all die. She hasn't seen one yet that has lived in her 5 months of being at the hospital. They say there is a 50% chance that the treatment will work. That's not very high odds.
Please pray for this family.
Pray for:
Yesterday we had a little pauses from the rain and then it would start again. Rained all night last night and all day today without stopping. (As of this morning we had gotten 15in of rain in the last 56 hours). The rivers are flooded and at times are impassable. Some of the lower lying streets are flooded as well. Went to see the river in Lucinda today and it was about waist high as people were crossing on foot. Employees were bringing clothes so they were ready to stay the night if needed. (As I am writing this, it has stopped raining...hopefully for good and we will see the sun tomorrow!)
With the large amounts of rain have come the power outages. Also, the water system here at the children's center needs all new tubing, but the hospital doesn't have the money right now to fix it. So, I have been blessed with water a couple of times since Tuesday. I try to take advantage and shower and wash dishes when I have water. I have been collecting rain water to flush the toilet and wash dishes when needed.
When the rain comes, it gets cold. Cold here is in the low 70's. This morning it was 70F in my house when I woke up. This is when we break out the sweaters, slippers, and warm blankets. With the humidity and very open houses, it always feels colder.
Taking advantage now of the electricity and internet.Christine Bellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01942613602892510350noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7957060470300876064.post-42269980151922494412013-11-26T07:29:00.000-05:002013-11-26T07:29:46.545-05:00Honduran ElectionsMany of you have heard about the Honduran elections and wonder what is going on down here. Well, there was lots of military personnel and police presence even in the rural areas such as here on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday, many of the local churches spent in prayer and fasting for the elections on Sunday. Sunday, it was forbidden to have meetings before 5pm, so we moved church to the evening. Most people just recommended not going out of your house. (We didn't even make it to church Sunday evening...it rained and the river flooded and was impassable.)
So, the candidates for the elections were some interesting characters. The Libre (Free) party was created by the EX-President's (Mel Zelaya-who was thrown out in 2009) wife named Xiomara. Yes, his wife was running for president! Which meant, he was pretty much running again but through his wife. They are very much wanting a dictatorship and was the issue why he was thrown out. They go along the lines of communism and socialism, very much involved with Hugo Chavez when he was alive. What the uneducated here don't understand is that this is not freedom, but bondage. I was praying that either one of the other candidates would win. This became a very strong party here with lots of support and the final election was very close between her and the winner. Some still think it was fraud.
The other candidate that was big was for the Nationalist party, the more conservative party. He is actually the one that won. His name is Juan Orlando and will be the next President of Honduras. Some think this is the safest thing for the country right now, some think it's the worst thing for the country. God knows best! One of the things he has already done, many Hondurans don't like. He created new hourly work contracts here, which means that Hondurans now can work for a company part time making less money than they were before. After the minimum wage was almost doubled 2 years ago, this has created a way to keep employees. In the states, we are used to working hourly and this is nothing new. The Hondurans though think that their rights have been taken away. So, this is the new president and some are not happy.
The other that was in the running was Villeda for the liberal party. He did get some votes, but not like the others. Don't know much about him and what he stands for, just know he is part of the liberal party.
So, yes this was a very pivotal election in Honduras. There was rumor of communism, socialism, riots, uproars, fighting, even possible intercountry war. I think because of this, God's people came together and prayed and God heard their prayers. People say that even if things are investigated that the results can't change now. There has been fear of the Libre party upraising and creating problems. Up until now, there is nothing really different.
Thank you for all your prayers.Christine Bellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01942613602892510350noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7957060470300876064.post-38043904869726411012013-10-27T14:02:00.001-04:002013-10-27T14:02:23.297-04:00Wow...has it really been a month?So...just realizing that it's been a month since I posted to my blog. Lots of things have been happening to keep me busy.
Sydney left about 2 weeks ago now after a wonderful 7 weeks in the lab with us and living at the house with me. It was a blessing to have her. She helped cover 2 employee vacations.
Osiris, remember the little girl I asked for prayer for, well, she came back to visit with her mom. They came from Tegucigalpa for 5 days and came to visit us at the hospital about 2 weeks ago. Heather made her a cake and we celebrated her. She is doing well, weak at times, but taking the Chemo treatment well. Doctors seem to think she is responding well, according to mom, Erlinda. We took up another donation for them and were able to send them off again with just under $100...amazing. We have very generous employees. We also brought Osiris' two younger siblings to the Children's center here where they can be better cared for during their time in Tegucigalpa...they are very sweet kids.

For the next month, I will be translating at church every Sunday. A missionary's mom who is visiting is teaching our adult Sunday school class for 5 weeks. We started today, and I think it went pretty well. We had one lady come to Christ. I am so amazed at the work of the Holy Spirit that works through language barriers and poor translators to bring people to Christ. It's amazing. God is so good! I asked Lucy to come and pray with her and pray for her. Her name is Luicila. You can be praying for her and her growth in the Lord. Her husband, Rogelio came to Christ last Sunday. God is doing an amazing work despite difficulties we have had at the church lately.

A day to celebrate the Word of God and the power that it has for salvation, for transformation, for comforting, for manifesting love etc. A day to celebrate the freedom we have to own a Bible and be able to freely share the Gospel. A day to remember to pray for those nations where owning a Bible is illegal. A day to remember to pray for the translation of the Bible in languages that do not have Bible translation yet. A day to remember to pray for those persecuted for bearing the name of Christ. A day to be thankful for the written Word of God, for the ability to read it and study it.
The church participated in a parade today for Bible day. We made signs and marched from one village to the next singing hymns and then had a church service to finish off the evening. It's so neat to see the Hondurans rejoice in the freedom they have to own Bibles and share the gospel.
So, I want to ask you to pray...pray for those who have never heard the gospel, pray for those who are yet to have a Bible in their own language, pray for translation and translators of the Bible, pray for those who are persecuted for the name of Christ, pray for those who live in countries where owning a Bible is illegal, pray for those who will never own a Bible and memorize the pages they can get their hands on, pray for God's Word to penetrate hearts with the truth.
They also celebrate September 28th with cultural night, the day the soldiers actually reached the capital and Honduras was truly declared independent. I was able to go to a little of both.
